Spring Break Synopsis

Vacation from school wasn't supposed to mean a vacation from this much-celebrated blog. However, for the third time this year, when I tried to publish my blog, something screwy happened and lo and behold: all that hard work was flushed down the toilet!

Last Sunday (meaning the 20th of March), I joined ten other young men from the hallowed halls of Hotchkiss on a journey to the wilds of Northern California. We trekked to place without showers, without satellite television, without sanitary bathrooms, and yes...only a fire to keep us all warm! Yosemite National Park was absolutely freezing cold! We arrived in very rainy conditions around 3 pm and two days later we left in the same very rainy conditions.

We spent much of our first few hours there setting up three tents, a canopy I borrowed from my church, some tarps to cover the fire and firewood, and chopping wood for said fire. After about two hours it started to snow a little bit which was very exciting since I have only been in falling snow once in my life and that was about a decade ago. Soon, the snow was falling very heavily and being the intelligent, college-educated young man that I am, I ran around in it for about thirty seconds before realizing that my only pair of shoes (yeah, forgot the other pair. I don't recommend it) were completely soaked. That night we ate, chatted, had a devotional from I John 1, sat around the fire and went to bed early. Then the real fun started...

Our tents were already soaked when we went to bed, but around 1:30 am, the tent that four guys were in (see picture above) collapsed from the weight of the falling snow. My friend Eric awoke to the ceiling of the tent sticking to his cheek. Much ado was made about many things and the whole campsite turned into a war zone, with most of the guys rearranging the tarps. However, I can only tell you this secondhand because I was definitely asleep throughout the whole catastrophe! The next morning our campsite looked vastly different.

Well, Monday was blessedly clear, so we took turns driving around Yosemite Valley to see the sights and take pictures. Eric, Nick, Jared, Ruben, and I hiked up to the base of Yosemite Falls where my camera was subsequently soaked and didn't work for several hours. Some guys played Risk and Poker back in camp and some of us read some books we had brought along. That night, we all gathered around the fire and ate some beans and sloppy joes. Then, we talked of many doctrinal and practical topics for several hours and then read through I John 2. Around 9 o'clock, as we were getting ready to go to bed, it started to rain again, and soon it was coming down steadily. That night, nine guys slept in our biggest tent and Kent and Nate slept around the fire. We could hear the rain ominously intensifying and soon could feel it. I woke up at 4:20am when Matt Telle was too wet to sleep and so left the tent for the warmth of the fire. The rain had not let up one bit. I followed him about half an hour later. By 6 o'clock, six of us were around the fire and we decided we couldn't enjoy ourselves spending all our time around the fire and sleeping in giant puddles. So we started packing up about an hour later and were all packed up at 8:30am, and still the rain was falling.

So, we did have plenty of fun, but had to head home early. We are not the peerless pioneers that our ancestors were! But I did catch up on tons of sleep and got to hang out with Amy a lot, so that was a plus. Oh yeah, I also did some homework, too!

I'll update again soon!

Amy-style

Well, since Happy hasn't posted for some time now I thought I'd post on here for him... only.... Amy-style.

Spring break has officially started and Happy has been preparing to go to Yosemite with around 11 other guys. It's possible that a few might have dropped out, but I'm not sure. They've been preparing for a while now and bought a TON of food yesterday. Happy's car was visibly weighed down in the back with all the food. The plan is to leave tomorrow morning by 8 am. Originally some guys wanted to leave by 7 am, but that idea was shot down.

I'm not exactly sure what they'll be doing up there. I know they'll be hiking a bunch of well-known trails, but I'll just let Happy post about that when he gets back. He's taking a TON of pictures (I let him use my memory card along with his) so maybe he'll put some on here. They'll be back some time on Friday. I think Happy wants to get back for the service at church Friday night so hopefully they'll be able to get everything packed up quickly.

Oh, one more thing! Pray that Happy gets better, also Travis as well. Happy's got a cold that's just wearing him out and could get worse since he'll be sleeping in the FREEZING cold on the ground. Travis has a sinus infection that he got medicine for on Thursday--at least I think it was Thursday. Hopefully they'll get enough rest and take lots of vitamin C. I gave some to Happy to take. I hope he remembers!

Ok, I'm off to bed. Have a lovely Sunday! God bless!

Another loss

That's right. We lost again. This time it was by nine points. Jake Dennis had 16 points and I had 17. It's really discouraging to be 0-4, and it's even more discouraging that I have so many guys that "can't make it" to the game. I can understand homework needs but I can't excuse anything else. A commitment was made to this team and no matter how much they don't take it seriously, they've let their team down.

Today was a doozy since I got minimal sleep last night. I skipped my English Lit class @ 8:00am but got up and went to chapel. It was an uneventful day, except that the guys' baseball team won in the bottom of the ninth. I was in the library at the time and heard the roar of the crowd pretty clearly. I had a good view of the scoreboard and saw it change from us losing by one to winning by one.

Just two more days till Spring Break!

5 months, 0-3, and the coming of Spring Break

Sorry that once again it has been a week since I have posted on this oft-viewed Blog.

Today marks five months that Amy and I have been dating. Without a doubt, it has been the very best five months of my life. I'm so thankful to God for bringing us together while in Israel and he continues to sustain our relationship. She is amazing!

So last night my intramural team was trying to win our first game of the season, since we lost our first two games. We were playing Hotchkiss Upper Front (a way more talented team than mine) and we got down 21-2 early on. That's right 21-2!! We clawed our way back into the game and after I hit a three-pointer with three minutes left, we only trailed by two. Alas, we could not complete the comeback and ended up losing 48-42. I had 20 points. If we don't start winning, there's no way we'll make the playoffs.

Spring Break starts Friday after classes. Me and 11 other guys are driving up to Yosemite National Park on Sunday morning to stay until Friday. Our bare bones that we call "plans" are in desperate need of some flesh. Friday and Saturday will consist of a flurry of getting items together and packing vehicles. Unfortunately, Half-Dome will not be open to the public, so that is a major disappointment. I was most looking forward to climbing it again, after conquering the mighty rock three years ago. Oh well.

OK, back to studying here in the library!

Laziness and Anger

So the lessons of today were pretty obvious for me.

First, the chapel speaker (forget his name) scored a direct hit with his message this morning. It was basically a full-fledged salvo of God's Word directed right at me specifically. He used Proverbs 6, which talks about the sluggard learning from the industrious ant. I've been devolving this semester, as far as work ethic goes. Sometimes going underwater for awhile seems better than struggling to tread the water. Just for the sake of the analogy (this is pretty bad) I think that if I just get my stuff done ahead of time, or at least before midnight, that I wouldn't have to tread because I'd be back in the shallow end.

Then tonight I almost lost my temper during our first intramural basketball game. We lost, and we shouldn't have. And I got too frustrated with the refereeing and with my teammates and myself. I actually kind of ripped the neckline of one of my favorite shirts so that was pretty ridiculous. I need to keep the priority of being a mature Christian with the singular purpose of glorifying God in mind. Please call me on this if you see it.

Well, a little Bible reading and some pleasure reading and I'm asleep. See ya later all ("all" meaning very few)

Gore

Dr. Simons' quote of the day: "This is my favorite line in [George] Orwell: 'I thought that the greatest joy in the world would be to drive a bayonet into a Buddhist priest's guts.' And, boy, do they deserve it!"

I'm not going to comment on this quote other than the fact that Dr. Simons did run into Buddhist priests in Vietnam.

OK, quickly, today was another typical busy Wednesday. I got about 3 and a half hours of sleep and endured three classes and chapel. My 8:00 class wasn't too bad, mostly because it was all Shakespeare and a few of his sonnets. I'm beginning to really enjoy Shakespeare and want to start reading all his best stuff. I've only read a little bit of Shakespeare: Romeo and Juliet, Othello, Hamlet, and Macbeth. That's all, I think. How much Shakespeare have my readers read? (Basically that's just a plea for someone to comment on my blog!!)

Well, it's time to study for my Foundations of Science quiz. Amy and I mistakenly started to study for it on Monday night because we were under the impression that the quiz was on Tuesday. Hopefully, I'll stay awake.

Peace.
